First Snow

July 1, 2014

As I gazed out my office window watching the young girls of Hubbard Cottage running and sliding, and just plain slipping their way home, couldn’t help but think back to my childhood when the season’s first snowfall infused me with excitement.

I remembered awaiting the ring of the final school bell so that I could rush outside to play in the snow. The walk home was more like running and sliding, seeing just how far I could glide over the snowy, white crystals covering the roads. The memory of building snowmen and giant snowballs returned. Just how big a snowball could one person make? My brothers and I would challenge each other to see who could make the biggest one, and then we would try to put the three balls together to make a snowman. Then of course, there was sledding and the challenge of whose sled would fl y faster or further down the hill.

As I watched the girls, I got the feeling they were playing the same game. One girl took a sled and was happy and content to be sliding down the hill. Then before you knew it another, and another, were sledding along beside her. For some, getting started was quite a challenge, while others zipped across the snow to the bottom of the hill. They all seemed to be trying to figure out how to get their sled sliding further and faster than the one beside them.

I was thankful for this visit down memory lane. May we all be blessed with being taken back to our younger days by the play of children. Stop by for a visit; the same could happen to you, most any day at the Homes.
