Kurn Hattin Students Shoot Straight in Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship

On Sunday, January 26, ten Kurn Hattin students competed in the regional Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship in Bellows Falls, Vermont. This contest for children, ages 9 to 14, provides an athletic outlet and encourages the values of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Competitors in different age groups attempt 15 basketball shots. Those who make the most consecutive successful shots win and move on to the state competition. Our very own fifth grader, Tegan, will be doing just that!

Sara’s teaching method begins with the children lying on yoga mats in what used to be the milk house of the old Kurn Hattin barn.
Captain Richard Phillips Shares Story of Courage with Kurn Hattin Children

Captain Richard Phillips, a Merchant Marine and the subject of an extraordinary international drama when he was captured by Somali pirates who attacked and boarded his ship, in April 2009, visited Kurn Hattin and its students on Tuesday, December 3rd, to talk about his life and career. Captain Phillips shared with the students his path to joining Merchant Marines and his experience as Captain for 25 years. “What I’ve learned is that we’re all stronger than we even know and that the strength is already within us,” he said. “Nothing is completely lost until we choose to give up. Failure is only final when we quit,” he continued. The afternoon presentation ended with a question and answer session. There were many questions from the students, ranging from what dangers he faced on the sea to which continents he’s visited– which was every continent.

PBiS (Positive Behavioral interventions and Support) is a nationally recognized method of addressing behavior, conduct, and problem solving, where students, faculty, and staff work together to promote a positive, predictable, and a safe environment for everyone in all school settings.
Moving Veterans’ Day Observance Held at Kurn Hattin Homes

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, veterans and friends joined the Kurn Hattin Homes' children, staff, and volunteers for the 24th Annual Veterans' Day Observance. The annual event featured a program of commentary, music, and a delicious meal to honor and remember all veterans and their gift of service.
