The Kurn Hattin Counseling Center

A Place to Relax, Learn and Grow

The Counseling Center at Kurn Hattin Homes provides mental health support and resources to students and their families. We also provide guidance to Kurn Hattin staff who are working with students.  There is a lending library with information and guidance on a variety of topics, including parenting, dealing with anxiety, child development, and learning differences. Counselors are available to meet with parents and families, whether to check in or to provide guidance on specific concerns or questions. The counseling center offers one-to-one counseling sessions as well as therapeutic group support for topics such as dealing with grief, peer relationships, and managing anger.

Q+A

Do all students receive counseling?

Yes, each cottage is assigned an individual counselor who meets regularly on a one-to-one basis with every child. The frequency of the sessions varies and is dependent upon the child's needs and other factors.

What do the counselors do?

Counselors take the time to get to know each child personally—their backgrounds, interests, strengths, and challenges—in order to help them manage stress, deal with transitions, and improve relationships with others. Counselors are professionally trained to provide support for specific mental health needs such as depression, anxiety and ADHD. Our staff works closely with residential, nursing, and academic staff on campus in order to help meet your child’s individual needs.

What are counseling sessions like?

These one-to-one meetings provide time for your child to relax and feel listened to. Children may talk about feelings, express worries or concerns, and ask questions. Counselors listen, understand and help children develop skills and strategies for handling problems. In addition, the Counseling Center offers organized group support meetings on topics such as managing emotions and stress, mindfulness, and social skills.

What can I do if I am concerned about my child?

Please feel free to call or schedule a visit with your child’s counselor, whether just to check in or to discuss specific questions or concerns you may have. If you need contact information for a specific counselor, please call the Lead Counselor at 802-721-6933.

How can my child’s counselor help my family?

Counselors can answer your questions, offer useful ideas for parenting and strategies for better communication, and help your family take steps toward stability and healthier relationships.

We can also help connect you with resources for needs such as doctors or psychologists, transportation to and from Kurn Hattin, food, physical safety, and dealing with substance abuse.
