Westminster, VT – Music has always been an important part of the Kurn Hattin Homes experience.
“Music is more than an academic subject,” says Sue Kessler, assistant executive director of Kurn Hattin Homes. “Music has always been an integral part of our curriculum because it benefits the children on so many levels, it can be a transformative experience. Learning to play an instrument and being part of an ensemble can foster self-confidence and social skills, teach patience, and enhance creativity. Having the Ashuelot Concert musicians bring their talent and passion for music education to our students adds a dimension to our program that’s incredibly valuable.”
Ashuelot Concerts, led by Artistic and Executive Director Nick Burns (pianist) and Program and Artistic Director Louisa Stonehill (violinist), is a non-profit organization that offers schools the opportunity to bring music education and live classical music from some of the world’s most talented musicians to their students.
At their recent visit to Kurn Hattin Homes, Ashuelot Concerts presented a program entitled When Tchaikovsky met Brahms & Grieg. In between the musical selections, they shared information about the pieces and the composers then welcomed questions from the children at the conclusion of the performance.
“It was a joy, a pleasure and privilege to share our music with the students and staff at Kurn Hattin,” said Stonehill. “I am in awe of these young people who had such a sophisticated response to the concert. The thoughts, questions, and insights that the children shared at the end of the performance shows just how visceral the impact the live classical experience was for them.”
Ashuelot Concerts School Program uses live music to inspire young minds. Their work at Kurn Hattin is part of a broader program that reaches around 5,000 children annually. By bringing world-class musicians directly into schools, they create special moments of inspiration that resonate long after the final note is played.
