Press Release from People’s United Community Foundation

People’s United Community Foundation Awards $5,000 to New England Kurn Hattin Homes in Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT – The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, announced today that it has awarded $5,000 to New England Kurn Hattin Homes in Westminster, Vermont.

Since 1894, Kurn Hattin has helped thousands of at-risk children grow up to lead productive and purposeful adult lives by providing a safe home and quality education in a nurturing environment. The funding from People’s United Community Foundation will support its residential home and school, designed to educate and heal young people from families affected by social or economic dysfunction.

Approximately 100 boys and girls live and attend school on the Kurn Hattin 280-acre campus, which includes a working farm. Children are taught to think independently, make wise decisions, and to respect one another. Individual and group counseling, along with hands-on learning opportunities, also play a key role in students’ progress.

“We are grateful to People’s United Community Foundation for its commitment to the community,” said Connie Sanderson, Adjunct Executive Director, Kurn Hattin Homes.  “As a charitable organization, Kurn Hattin depends on this kind of support to continue to provide services to young children in need.”

Established in 2007, People’s United Community Foundation was formed to help support programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for citizens in the communities that People’s United Bank serves. People’s United Bank, founded in 1842 and serving customers from New York to Maine through a network of more than 400 branches, is the largest independent bank headquartered in New England. The Foundation places special emphasis on programs designed to promote economic self-sufficiency, education and improved conditions for low-income families and neighborhoods. The funding priorities of the Foundation include community development, youth development, and affordable housing.
