Summer Ends and School Begins at Kurn Hattin

September 4, 2012

Summer Recreation Over and School to Begin at Kurn Hattin

September 4, 2012 |  Westminster, VT – Summer is a busy time at Kurn Hattin Homes with camps, classes and other activities. The choices are many including various sports, outdoor adventure, dance, computer skills, cooking, quilting, babysitting, Sheriff’s leadership, field excursions, swimming, tutorials and generally having fun. Several sports camps are also open to the local community children. Summer comes to a close with parents joining on Family Day for a barbeque and carnival with games, waterslide and pony rides.

Then it’s Training Week for the teachers and houseparents. Training Week is the only time when Kurn Hattin has no children on campus. It’s time to get down to business, reconnect, and get ready for school and cottage life. The days are filled with presentations and discussions on safety measures, emergency drills, and committees meetings and discussions on issues regarding the care of the children. The teachers stock and set up their classrooms. The house parents deep clean and ready the homes for their children’s arrival. The week ends with an all staff picnic, live music and dancing.

School starts earlier than most with children arriving this year on Sunday, August 19 and classes beginning the next day. The newly enrolled children have already participated in some portion of the summer program and are ready and eager to join the other children for the school year. “I liked doing everything this summer, especially riding the horses,” said Mystik, a 3rd grader. “But I’m also ready for school to start.” And all of us are ready as well. Kurn Hattin Homes is a charitable year-round home and school for in-need and at-risk children, ages 6-15, from throughout the Northeast.
